In 1945, Hungarian soldier András Toma was captured by the Soviet army. After a short time in POW camps, he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Russia in 1947.
The problem?
Toma only spoke Hungarian, a language no one around him understood. His speech was mistaken for incoherent rambling, and he was declared mentally ill.
He remained in that institution, cut off from the world, for over five decades.
It wasn’t until the year 2000 that a doctor who spoke Hungarian realized the truth: Toma wasn’t insane at all, he had simply been speaking a language nobody recognized.
After 55 years in captivity, he finally returned to Hungary, reuniting with surviving relatives.
Today, András Toma is remembered as the last known WWII prisoner of war to be repatriated.
