It wasn't always expensive by the way. The expensiveness comes from women having so many alternative income streams - including simps. If you look up ancient sources, it says that prostitutes were as cheap as loafs of bread. So you could either buy a bread or pay for a prostitute. I suspect that was the case until feminism took over. Now they have an abundance of options, so that drives the prices up.

However, there were also much more expensive prostitutes — courtesans or hetaerae — who served wealthy Romans and could charge fortunes, living in luxury.

So yes, for the lowest class of Roman prostitutes, the saying “as cheap as a loaf of bread” is accurate. But it applied only to the poorest and most common end of the spectrum.

Yep. It used to be so cheap that even slaves and beggars could affort it. Christianity might have made it more expensive later on, but that is how it was back then. Also you could have almost any age you wanted, since it was before christian morality and feminism.
