I am an amateur storm chaser and have studied severe weather meteorology for many years. I am fascinated with tornadogenesis (the atmospheric conditions which are requisite to the formation of a rotating lower mesocycle in a super cellular thunderstorm) and have immersed myself in the study of both historical tornado records as well as the various indicia of destruction utilized by meteorologists, structural engineers, wind engineers and architects to discern the magnitude of damage. I have personally witnessed two tornados in my life while living here in Michigan and aspire to one day make a trip to OK, KS and/or NE to actually chase far more virulent, dangerous and destructive storms in the Great Plains.

They don't have tornadoes where I am so I am not sure how its like to see one.

Have you heard of terms like "doppler radar?" It has something to do with the weather but I'm not sure exactly what. Or those Chinese weather balloons that resemble UFOs?

The most I get where I live is really severe lightening storms which I watch from inside my house.

Yea, I like it. I remember going outside during a tornado warning and just watching the sky. Hearing the rain, sirens, wind, and thunder was so relaxing. The rain and wind also felt good. It’s a good cope overall.

That kind of weather warning is common in Tennessee and surrounding states in the U.S. if I'm not mistaken.

We should reserve this conversation for element when I have time to properly explicate and elucidate these concepts while actually talking as opposed to typing. But, no, not all tornadoes have a condensation funnel and it is one of many popular misconceptions that they do. Usually, there is a visible funnel cloud and it takes on the color of whatever it happens to be consuming/destroying but some of the most notorious storms never even had a funnel or if there was one, it wasn't readily discernable. Many of the tornadoes in the Palm Sunday Outbreak of 1965 had no visible funnels yet were highly destructive (F-4 ratings).

Doppler is an advanced type of radar which measures wind velocities relative to the actual radar installation and then renders them in colors which represent the intensity of the winds both facing the radar and moving in the opposite direction. This type of data enables meteorologists to more easily identify the so-called "hook-echo" radar marker associated with tornadoes, when incoming and outgoing velocities are both intense and wrapped into a small area on the screen, indicative of rotation.
