That is like asking what caused the demise of the Roman Empire, a question which, incidentally, the great English historian and philosopher Edward Gibbon wrote a 3,000 page study on and he still wasn't able to definitively answer the question. The very short and superficially simplistic answer to your own question is that the US had and still has abundant and exploitable natural resources that were easily transformed into fungible, mercantile goods. The first Europeans to arrive here were the Puritans and they inculcated in successive generations a strong work ethic and a relentless drive for self improvement through constructive enterprise. Subsequent immigrant communities reified and confirmed this culture of industry which, when complimented by vast and accessible natural resources was conducive to supporting, sustaining and greatly increasing population growth.
