Story of how I got screwed trying to marry due to customs.
I’m 30 years old never had a girlfriend, parents arranged a marriage. A daughter of fathers colleague. Low class family, with 5 children and her younger brother has a severe genetic disease.
In my country dowry is mandatory so they requested 2000 dollars as a “virgininty” price(which my father thought is the whole dowry amount), and 6000 dollar expenses for a wedding.
My parents delivered the 2k and started preparing for a wedding. And then, her mother came up with a full request. Other than a virginity price, they demand 4000$ worth of jewelry and 3000 dollars of ACTUAL bride price, making total dowry of 5000 dollars.
Plus 4k of jewelry plus 6k of wedding equals 15000$ which obviously my family couldn’t afford.

The marriage was cancelled but they did not return 2000 dollars (+ we already bought 1000$ clothes for her).
Turns out they spent the money we gave them on a surgery of her younger brother.
We can’t take it back.

Is there any hope to marry and not get scammed, I don’t know what to do in this life

It’s an old tradition but kinda genius, a perfect way to make women available only for high status families, and unreachable for a lower niche of men.
Even some christian countries have it, but it’s mostly common in islamic society

Travel the world as you can afford it

depends what country you live, I would go to egypt or morroco and then look for the small rural towns, I can promise you dowry price will always be much higher in urban areas and also larger chance of false virginity
